  • Jack Dishel (born Yevgeny Leonidovich Dishel, Russian: Евгений Леонидович Дишель; September 24, 1976) is an American musician, actor, writer, comic and producer. Born in the Soviet Union, he grew up in the US from the age of three. He releases and performs music under the band name Only Son and was previously the lead guitarist for The Moldy Peaches.[1]

On December 17, 2015, Dishel launched his new web series, ":DRYVRS" starring Macaulay Culkin,[2] which amassed over 6 million views on its first day of release and within its first week online had been viewed more than 20 million times.

    Early life[edit]

Born Yevgeny Leonidovich Dishel to a Russian Jewish family in what was then the Soviet Union, Jack moved to the United States as a three-year-old. He spent his early childhood in Queens, New York, before moving to Valley Stream at the age of nine. After graduating high school he attended SUNY Purchase College and subsequently moved to New York City to pursue music.[3]

    Only Son[edit]

Starting in 2006, Jack Dishel began releasing albums under the band name Only Son. Only Son's debut album, "The Drop to the Top" (2006) includes "My Museum", "Long Live The Future", "Sleepyface" and "Brand New Broken Heart".[4] He toured the world in support of the album for two years opening for Regina Spektor and former bandmate Adam Green. Only Son sophomore album, entitled "Searchlight", was released January 18, 2011. He made seven videos from the album, including "Magic", (directed by VMA nominee Adria Petty[5]), “It’s A Boy” (starring Boardwalk Empire’s Aleksa Palladino) and “Stamp Your Name On It” (featuring cameos by Macaulay Culkin and Reggie Watts). The video for “Call Them Brothers”, his duet with Regina Spektor, features archival family footage of Dishel as a child blended with new super 8mm footage of the two singers. All of the videos are on Only Son's YouTube channel.[6]

    Moldy Peaches[edit]

Dishel was also the lead guitarist for indie-folk band Moldy Peaches, who rose to fame for their song "Anyone Else But You" from the "Juno" soundtrack. Though they became more widely known in 2008, they took an "indefinite hiatus" six years earlier in 2002, after touring the world supporting The Strokes[6] and headlining their own shows. Known for their stage costumes and ironic sense of humor, Moldy Peaches have become a seminal band in modern indie rock culture. On their debut recording, released by Rough Trade Records in 2001, Dishel played guitar on "Nothing Came Out", and drums on both "Who's Got The Crack" and "Steak For Chicken". They later released a single for County Fair/Rainbows on which he plays guitar. Dishel dances with the band in the video for "Lucky Number Nine" which he helped choreograph.

Dishel has appeared on albums by Regina Spektor, Kimya Dawson, Nickel Eye (solo project of Nikolai Fraiture from The Strokes) and Adam Green, with whom he wrote "Boss Inside" ('Minor Love' (Rough Trade 2010). He was also the touring tenor guitarist for Los Angeles band Little Joy.

    Personal life[edit]

Dishel is married to singer-songwriter Regina Spektor, with whom he has performed live and recorded music. Dishel and Spektor have a son together.[7]

    Producer[edit]

In addition to co-producing the Only Son albums, Dishel works as a producer, arranger and co-writer for other artists, including Jarrod Gorbel, Adrien Reju[8] and Toby Goodshank.

    :DRYVRS[edit]

":DRYVRS" is an episodic comedy YouTube web-series created, directed and starring Dishel. The first episode features Macaulay Culkin revisiting his childhood role from Home Alone.[9] The video went viral with over 6 million views on its first day of release and the number of views grew to 20 million in its first week online. Dishel has stated that future episodes will include appearances by Rosanna Arquette and Steven Weber.
